Builders discovered bones in the garden of a bungalow in Biggin Hill in London, prompting a police investigation.
The bones, found at the address in Aperfield Road last Friday by workers renovating the property according to The Sun, have been confirmed as human, the Met Police has said.
Police rushed to the scene in Bromley after a call around 3.33pm last week to reports that the bones had been discovered.
A forensics team also attended the property where a cordon was set up around the house for six days as part of the investigation.
Pictures of the scene following the discovery showed the site sealed off with blue tents outside. The crime scene has since been closed and a police cordon is no longer in place.
The circumstances around the discovery of the bones remains unclear. Specialists are expected to test the bones to establish the age and identity of who they belonged to.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “The bones were sent for specialist examination and were confirmed to be human. However, further testing is underway to establish the age of the bones and ascertain identity.
“The crime scene is now closed and an investigation remains ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
The investigation is being led by the local criminal investigation department detectives with support from specialist crime colleagues, The Independent understands, as it is expected to take time to establish what happened.
Neighbours said that the property had been recently purchased and the new owner had not yet moved in as the property was being renovated, The Sun reported.
“An old lady lived there for years but she moved away and another woman bought it to completely refurbish it. She couldn’t move in until they’d finished,” a neighbour said according to the newspaper.
Local planning documents show an application for a single storey rear extension and elevational alterations at the property in south London.
