There were 4,796 reported shop thefts in Croydon town centre in the last 12 months, down 4.9 per cent from 5,043 the previous year. Benedict said some shoplifters are able to exploit gaps in enforcement and Croydon’s transport links – including the tram stop outside Freshfields – to evade prosecution.
