A British tourist has tragically died after being recovered from the waters surrounding the Greek island of Zakynthos, commonly referred to as Zante.
The 34 year old is understood to have encountered difficulties while swimming close to Marathonisi, a compact islet favoured by day visitors, before fellow beachgoers sounded the alert on Tuesday afternoon (August 18) upon observing he was in distress in the water. Personnel from the Zakynthos Port Authority, supported by individuals on the beach, retrieved him from the sea and made efforts to resuscitate him.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed before he was transported to Zakynthos General Hospital, where medical staff confirmed his death, with the Port Authority subsequently initiating an inquiry into the events surrounding his passing, The Mirror reports.
“Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), the Zakynthos Port Authority was informed of a 34-year-old foreigner (British citizen) in a difficult position near the Marathonisi area of Laganas, Zakynthos,” authorities confirmed in a statement.
They added: “With the assistance of beachgoers, he was transported to the shore, where he was provided with first aid using the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) method. The 34-year-old was picked up by a patrol boat and transported to the port of Agios Sostis, Zakynthos.
“Subsequently, the man was taken to the Zakynthos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Zakynthos Port Authority.”
The Greek island of Zante has long been a firm favourite amongst British holidaymakers, and has now been named the most overtouristed destination in a 2025 Which? Travel report, which estimated that overnight visitors outnumber local residents by a staggering 150 to one.
