A section of the South Circular remains shut this morning
A major road in Putney has been shut overnight after a man in his 30s was stabbed outside a church. Police were called to Upper Richmond Road, which makes up part of the South Circular, shortly after 3.10pm on August 19, following reports of the incident.
Paramedics and London’s Air Ambulance treated the victim at the scene and took him to hospital, where he remains. The Metropolitan Police is awaiting a further update on his condition.
Officers took a man in his 50s into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and launched ‘urgent enquiries’ into the circumstances. In a statement, the force said the two men are known to each other, and there is no wider threat to the public.
Witnesses are asked to come forward to help in the ongoing investigation. A large crime scene is still in place between Charlwood Road and Ravenna Road on Upper Richmond Road, blocking traffic in both directions.
Photos show a lengthy cordon and a forensics tent near Putney Cemetery, with a number of police cars and officers standing guard. Bus routes 337 and 430 are being diverted away from the area in the meantime.
Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting CAD 4742/19AUG. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
