Trevin Campbell will be behind bars for life
A man has been locked up for life after the murder of a man leaving a silent disco in Brixton five years ago.
Gary Mayhew was shot dead around 6am on October 21, 2021, not long after he left the disco. The 32-year-old was rushed to hospital but died the same day.
His killer, Trevin Campbell, was found guilty of murder last week and today (Tuesday, August 25) was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve a minimum tariff of 30 years.
Four days after the murder and after he had been identified as a suspect, Campbell was arrested as he was boarding a flight from Gatwick Airport to Jamaica. However, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) found they couldn’t take it to trial.
But after detectives trawled CCTV and exmanined other evidence, they were able to re-arrest Campbell in December last year.
DI Emma Sharp said: “This has been a complex and extensive investigation spanning several years. Our officers remained committed to securing justice for Gary and his family and continued to pursue every available line of enquiry to build the strongest possible evidential case.
“Through detailed CCTV analysis, forensic examination and expert witness evidence, we were able to demonstrate Campbell’s responsibility for Gary’s murder and ensure he was brought to justice.
“Our thoughts remain with Gary’s family and friends, who have shown remarkable strength throughout this process.
“The use of firearms on London’s streets has devastating consequences for victims, families and communities.
“This conviction demonstrates our determination to tackle gun crime and hold those responsible fully accountable.”
