The main draw of the US Open Tennis Championship begins on Sunday, August 30
Wimbledon might be over but UK tennis fans can relive all the excitement as the fourth and final grand slam tennis tournament of the year gets underway.
The US Open begins in earnest on Sunday, 30 August – setting off 15 days of competing in the main draw before the women’s singles final on Saturday, September 12, followed by the men’s the next day.
Fans eager to watch every second of the drama can do so on the ESPN App (available to Apple and Android users) or on the US Open streaming hub, giving subscribers with an ESPN Unlimited plan access to every single match. Fans can also view up to four matches at once by selecting Multiview on mobile and synched TV devices. Disney+ subscribers can also view the action from day one of the championship.
Qualifying for both the men’s and women’s singles events concludes on Friday, August 28, with players losing a day on Thursday due to rain. In qualifying for the women’s singles, British trio Fran Jones, Katie Swan and Harriet Dart each progressed to the second round.
Among the male players, world number one Jannik Sinner is currently out of action due to injury, but Carlos Alcaraz is back on form after spending four months recovering from a wrist injury, while Novak Djokovic is also a bookies’ favourite.
The mixed doubles competition returned as a two-day event earlier this week and saw fellow Czechs Mensik and Karolina Muchova win the title and $1 million in prize money.
Meanwhile, the US Open has announced another bumper increase in prize money for this month’s tournament.
An overall prize fund of 108million US dollars (approximately £80m) is the biggest in the sport’s history and represents a 20 per cent rise for the second consecutive year.
The winners of the singles trophies will each receive 5.5m dollars (approximately £4m), while first-round prize money has been ramped up to more than £100,000.
