A woman on a business class flight was approached by a couple asking her to swap seats so their son could sit with them
A passenger was left completely baffled when a couple requested she switch seats on a flight so their son could be positioned next to them.
Most travellers would experience some guilt declining such a request, particularly given that passengers below a certain age cannot fly unaccompanied, but upon seeing him, she questioned why they’d even bothered asking.
When boarding the plane, she noticed a couple engaged in an intense exchange with flight attendants about their seat allocation, evidently unhappy with their assigned positions.
The awkward encounter intensified when the male traveller confronted the woman, claiming he’d been separated from his son during the flight.
Given they were apparently flying together, he asked whether she’d be willing to switch places to assist them, reports Belfast Live.
She explained: “The man from the couple immediately cornered me, standing over me, and I felt my heart drop. He said that he and his son are sitting separately, and if I would be willing to switch seats.
“I asked him if it was just him and his son, and he said yes. He lied. His wife was clearly with them – I overheard their conversation as I walked by. He then casually mentioned that the son is in the very back of the cabin.”
Declining to yield to the pressure, the traveller maintained her position.
She remembered: “I looked him right in the eye and told him I would rather not, and turned around to settle in.”
Ultimately, the woman who refused the seat swap was taken aback when she spotted the son, who ended up positioned directly ahead of her. She estimated he was roughly 20 years old, rather than the young child she may have originally anticipated.
She fumed: “The entitlement! They just wanted to sit together and pawn off the s*** seat to someone else.”
The woman also highlighted that they were travelling in business class, meaning there wasn’t truly any concept of “sitting together,” merely in close proximity to one another.
Are you obliged to swap plane seats to accommodate families?
Airlines attempt to seat children alongside an accompanying adult, particularly for younger passengers, though policies differ between carriers and depend on aircraft type and capacity.
Should a family become separated, flight attendants may request other travellers relocate so a child can be positioned with a parent or guardian. You’re entitled to decline this request, though it might create an uncomfortable situation.
It’s also important to remember that you could be asked to change seats for safety or operational purposes, including weight distribution requirements or emergency exit regulations.
This differs from “you must move because a family wants to sit together,” although it may appear comparable at the time.
If you feel under pressure to relocate on a flight against your wishes, consult the cabin crew for guidance. Staff will typically seek volunteers and may propose alternatives, such as repositioning the family to other vacant seats.
