Sir Keir Starmer is to stand down as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras reports suggest – triggering a by-election in the constituency.
Speaking to the New Journal, Starmer said it had been a “huge honour and privilege” to represent the constituency and succeed Frank Dobson, whom he described as “such a great constituency MP and a member of the last Labour government”.
Starmer said he would now focus on other areas of work, including international affairs, defence, security, trade and technology.
He also said he intended to continue his work combating violence against women and girls, an issue he said mattered to him “hugely”.
“It’s work I started before I became an MP and it’s work I’m keen to continue after I’m an MP,” he said.
Starmer said his priorities would now be split between international affairs and continuing his work on violence against women and girls.
His departure could open the door to a potential run by Green Party leader Zack Polanski, with the party having strong support in the constituency.
