Leroy Heffron, 38, of Sangley Road in Catford will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court today

The Metropolitan Police has named a suspect charged with murdering 39-year-old Thomas Carey in Lambeth. On Friday, September 4 emergency crews found the victim with severe head injuries at an address in Poynders Road, where he was declared dead shortly afterwards.

Four days later, on Tuesday, September 8, two men in their 30s were arrested on suspicion of murder, along with a woman also in her 30s who was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder.

This morning (Thursday, September 10), Leroy Heffron, 38, of Sangley Road in Catford, was charged with murder and remanded into custody. He will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today for a first hearing.

The other male suspect has been bailed while the investigation continues. The woman remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are pleased with the progress of the investigation into Thomas’ death, and our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing, and we continue to appeal for information. We urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual on the evening of Thursday, 3 September, into the early morning of Friday, 4 September, to reach out and speak to us.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond added: “We know this incident has caused concern and sadness across the local community, particularly among those who knew Thomas.

“Residents may continue to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak to one of our officers on patrol.”

Anyone with information, CCTV, doorbell footage or dashcam footage that may assist the investigation is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD7021/04SEP26.

Information can also be submitted via the Major Incident Public Portal.

Information can also be provided anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.
