The average price of a litre of petrol has now passed 170p
Skyrocketing petrol costs have now climbed to their highest point since the beginning of the Iran conflict, with the expense of filling a family vehicle with unleaded fuel approaching £100.
The typical cost per litre of petrol has now surpassed the 170p threshold, meaning it would set drivers back approximately £94 to fill a standard 55-litre tank, while in numerous locations costs are considerably steeper.
Drivers are confronted with a postcode lottery at filling stations, with even the lowest prices offered by supermarkets fluctuating dramatically throughout the nation. Maidstone in Kent currently has the steepest average cost in the UK for unleaded petrol this week at 175.2p per litre. That represents 20p per litre more than what motorists are spending in portions of Northern Ireland, and 15p per litre above the typical rate in Watford.

Diesel vehicle owners are spending an average of marginally over 190p, with numerous forecourts nationwide witnessing standard diesel prices breach the £2-per-litre threshold during the past week.
Diesel costs have reached 215p per litre at BP motorway services, while a petrol station on the M61 motorway near Bolton is charging 195.9p per litre of standard unleaded, amongst the steepest rates in the country. The latest figures from Fuel Finder reveal that no fewer than 200 petrol stations are currently levying 181p or more per litre of standard E10 unleaded, meaning that filling up a typical family car at these forecourts would exceed the £100 mark.
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “Since the start of this month, the cost of filling a family car has already risen by almost £5, to £94 for petrol and £106 for diesel. Average pump prices have jumped by yet another penny in just a day.”
He added: “Petrol has now broken through the £1.70-a-litre barrier and stands at 170.54p – its highest since 23 August 2022. Unfortunately for hard-pressed drivers, prices look set to keep on rising”.
