A British man is reported to have died after his car was swept away by floodwaters in north-eastern Spain as torrential rain battered parts of the country.
The man was driving near Olivella, around 25 miles west of Barcelona, when his vehicle approached a swollen stream and was reportedly “swallowed by the force of the water”, according to local media. La Vanguardia reported that the driver was caught out by the power of the torrent at the Begues stream near a bridge before his car plunged into the water and was swept away.
The incident comes as severe storms continue to affect parts of Spain, prompting authorities to issue red flood alerts. Heavy rainfall has triggered orange and red weather warnings across areas of Catalonia and Valencia, The Mirror reports.
Local fire crews reportedly received calls of a vehicle falling into water in Olivella at around 11pm on Wednesday (September 16). An update at around 12.30pm on Thursday confirmed the fire service had discovered the lifeless body of a man, roughly 500 meters from where the vehicle was found in the water.

The rescue operation was made up of eleven crews with the assistance of drones and rescue divers. The victim is understood to be a “middle-aged British man” who lived in the Las Colinas neighbourhood of Olivella in Catalonia, according to local media,
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has been approached for comment but it yet to respond at the time of publication.
