A portrait of beloved documentary presenter Sir David Attenborough has broken a world record – after being made out of pumpkins.
Measuring an astonishing 218.19 square metres, Sunnyfields Farm in Hampshire has broken the Guinness World Record for the largest mosaic created using squashes.
The display, which marks Sir David’s 100th birthday, used around 11,000 squashes and pumpkins, taking 18 people around five hours to complete.
Sir David was selected to feature on the display after the farm took to social media to ask the public who they would like to see on this year’s mosaic.
While hundreds of suggestions poured in, Sunnyfields director Thomas Nelson described the number of requests for Sir David as “overwhelming”.
Explaining what he believes lies behind the requests, Mr Nelson told The Independent: “David means so much to so many families across the UK and the world… he has been part of our living rooms; him and the causes he has championed for his entire life.”
In-house artist Andrew Béga, who designed the portrait, agreed: “Attenborough – given the icon that he is, was just the perfect fit.”
Guinness World Records senior adjudicator Pravin Patel confirmed the new record at Tuesday’s unveiling.
But this is not the first such achievement for Sunnyfields Farm.
Over the past decade, its owners have staged various pumpkin displays, first entering the record books in 2023 for a Tim Burton-inspired mosaic depicting Jack Skellington’s famous moonlight stance.
The farm beat its own record in 2025, creating a 212 square-metre mosaic featuring Ozzy Osbourne, commemorating the Black Sabbath frontman who died earlier that year.
But putting on this year’s display was a much harder feat, as extreme weather continues to affect pumpkin farmers across the country.
“It has been very tough,” said Mr Nelson. “The heat and lack of rain have been unprecedented. The best conditions for pumpkins are lots of sun and lots of water.”
As a result, five back-to-back heatwaves and prolonged drought conditions have taken their toll, with this year’s pumpkins being on the smaller side.
But these challenges have not deterred Sunnyfields Farm.
Discussing next year’s display, Mr Nelson said: “There is always scope to go bigger and better.
“We can’t say we have given too much thought to it, though it’s best not to put limits on what you can achieve.”
