What Direct Debit teaches us about the future of payments

David Crawford, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, Pay.UK

While many in fintech expected Open Banking to rapidly displace ‘legacy’ payment schemes, Direct Debit’s continued growth shows a more nuanced landscape.  For millions of people, Direct Debit is deeply embedded in their everyday lives, covering everything from energy bills and council tax to subscriptions. In 2025, the scheme processed a record 5 billion UK transactions and remains the number one choice for recurring payments, outperforming digital wallets.

Almost 60 years after its launch, Direct Debit’s resilience and usage offer key learnings that we can take forward as the UK develops its next-generation payments infrastructure. Its enduring success rests on three fundamental pillars that underpin its market dominance: predictability, reliability, and trust.

Holding firm in a changing market

Direct Debit was first conceived in 1964 and officially launched in 1970 as a way for users to set up and make hassle-free, recurring payments. The scheme combines regular, reliable payments with strong consumer protections and the flexibility for users to cancel payments.

This is a unique mix not reflected elsewhere in the payments market. While card payments have historically challenged Direct Debit, they do not offer the same capabilities for managing recurring agreements in-app. Digital wallets face similar constraints: payments can be scheduled, but they do not yet provide an equivalent blend of flexibility, predictability and protection.

Predictability, reliability, and trust drive adoption

These unique features, paired with the scheme’s core strengths, remain key to its success. Consumer satisfaction with Direct Debit stands at an impressive 92%. Among satisfied users, 65% cite its reliability and 60% value how it helps them plan their finances. In today’s economic landscape, the ability to automate recurring expenses with total predictability offers essential financial control.

Crucially, this confidence is anchored by the Direct Debit Guarantee, which 51% of consumers identify as a key driver of satisfaction. Among merchants, 80% say the Guarantee makes them more likely to offer Direct Debit, while overall satisfaction across merchants, banks, and fintechs mirrors consumers at an overwhelming 96%.

Lessons for next-generation infrastructure

As the industry continues to evolve, these insights offer a vital blueprint for successful payment initiatives that can stand the test of time. While Direct Debit continues to play an important and trusted role, it is one part of the wider payment mix and will not meet every user need or circumstance. Supporting the development of complementary payment options, including commercial Variable Recurring Payments (cVRPs), will therefore be important to ensure that recurring payment solutions remain inclusive, accessible and responsive to the changing needs of consumers and businesses.

Innovations like cVRPs also promise dynamic, frictionless user journeys. By enabling merchants to collect variable payments after a single authentication while maintaining strong consumer safeguards, cVRPs can sit alongside Direct Debit to expand choice without sacrificing security.

However, for any emerging payment method to achieve mass adoption, technology alone is not enough. New solutions must replicate the core principles that have made Direct Debit the nation’s preferred recurring payment option for decades: strong consumer protections, reliability, predictability and user control.

Driving forward future operational resilience

Trusted recurring payment mechanisms do far more than process transactions; they underpin the operational resilience, economic continuity and certainty that households, businesses, and public services depend on every day. When utility bills, mortgages, and essential services are settled reliably in the background, the broader economy benefits from confidence and stability.

That is why the future of UK payments cannot simply be about abandoning proven mechanisms in pursuit of novelty. The next generation of payments requires preservation with progress: safeguarding the ironclad protections, predictability, and trust that consumers and billers rely on today, while actively building the flexible, complementary rails of future payment systems.
