A new pub in the City is dedicated to Catherine Eddowes, one of the victims of Jack the Ripper.
Opened on 27 October, the Catherine Eddowes is the latest addition to the Craft Beer Co. chain, and stands opposite Mitre Square, where, in the early hours of 30 September 1888, the 46-year-old Londoner — who had recently returned from a hop-picking excursion in Kent — was found murdered. She was the fourth of the “canonical five” women killed in the East End that year.
“We wanted to name our pub in her honour, to remember the woman and give her a lasting place in the City’s everyday life,”Jon Huddart from the Craft Beer Co. tells us. “Her name belongs above our door.”
A sign hanging above the entrance, produced by Ash & Sarah Bishop at the Brilliant Sign Co., depicts Catherine walking across a cobbled street, with a basket of flowers in her hand and a shawl draped over her shoulders.
In recent years, there has been an increased push to de-romanticise the horrific killings that took place in 1888, instead shifting the focus onto the women who suffered. Look Up London organises a Feminist Jack the Ripper Tour.
Earlier this year, Nancy’s Cocktail Bar opened at London Bridge, its name a nod to the fictional character in Oliver Twist who is a victim of domestic abuse — and eventually murder — at the hands of her partner.
