The winners include a pocket park in Marylebone and a community garden in Paddington
Eleven new projects to make parts of Central London greener have been given cash sums by Westminster City Council.
The winners include a pocket park in Marylebone and a community garden in Paddington. Greening Westminster is a council-funded scheme which allows community projects to apply for a one-off grant.
The scheme has funded 60 different greening programmes across the borough since it was established in 2017.
George’s Pocket Park, near Baker Street, has been awarded £50,000 by the council to make the space greener and more welcoming. The funding will be used to make the trial pocket park a permanent feature of the local area. This will include biodiverse planting, quality public seating and a complementary mural.
A spokesperson for the Baker Street Quarter Partnership said: “The grant is an exciting step towards the next chapter for George’s Pocket Park. We look forward to developing the plans with The Portman Estate during 2027 and sharing more as the project progresses.”
The Holy Apostles Church, located in Pimlico, was also handed £25,000 to transform its grounds into a new community garden. This project will bring new planting, lawns and seating areas to the green space.
Peabody Avenue and Close Gardening Club was also awarded £20,000 to expand and improve the Coronation Garden. This funding will be used to support new planting, seating, paving and other enhancements.
