RNG stands for random number generator, the software behind every result at an online casino, including slots, table games, and online bingo outcomes.
The use of a random number generator means that results at UK casino sites are truly random (as close to 100% as possible) and are not changed or manipulated by the operator after a bet is placed.
Discover how RNGs work and why they matter when it comes to gambling online.
How does an RNG actually work?
House edge and RNGs are the two key deciding factors that affect a player’s chances of winning at any online casino site.
RNGs are based on a computer algorithm where a seed value is assigned as a starting point and used to generate a sequence of random numbers. This is complemented by continuous number cycling which loops through a fixed set of numbers repeatedly.
Using this process means that, for example, the result of a spin of a roulette wheel will be predetermined and cannot change during the spin. RNGs also ensure any bonus features will be triggered at random.
Most established and new UK casino sites use a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG), which runs via a mathematical process rather than true physical randomness, meaning results are never “completely” random but are as close to 100 per cent random as possible.
Which casino games use RNG?
All games controlled by software at online casinos and casino apps have random number generators implemented. This includes online slots, virtual blackjack, video poker and automated table games.
The Live Dealer casino works a little bit differently. Real human dealers run the live table games, and broadcast from studios or brick-and-mortar physical casinos. Read our guide on how live dealer casinos work for more information.
Why does RNG certification matter?
Independent testing labs like eCogra and Gaming Labs International (GLI) are important for certifying RNG software impartially before launch and retesting it periodically to confirm fairness. This matters as it reassures the bettor that the casino platform is not influencing results.
UK-licensed operators cannot adjust payout odds while a player is in the middle of their session. Certified RNG results can’t be tightened or loosened once a game is live. This is why players should choose an online casino that is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission before playing.
RNG in live casino versus software-based games
Live dealer casino games like live roulette, live blackjack, game shows and live baccarat are truly random with wheel spins, card shuffles and more, all dictated by a human dealer or host.
The live dealer experience is similar to physically playing in your own living room. The live dealer games are broadcast and live-streamed from studios or physical casinos that supply card games on online casinos. Evolution Gaming and Pragmatic Play are two of the biggest software providers for live dealer games.
Random number generators still play a part in live dealer games as a supporting role. This is true, for example, when assigning random multipliers in bonus rounds or during bonus features in Game Shows.
The fairness of a random number generator does not change the odds of winning long-term; payout percentages are still fixed and noted in the information section of the games. Players should still set deposit limits and time limits regardless of RNGs and provably fair algorithms being in play.

What does RNG mean in online casinos?
RNG stands for Random Number Generator, a software implemented into online casino games to make the results are as random as possible, using an algorithm.
Does a higher RTP mean a fairer RNG?
No, random number generators are set to be as close to 100% “random” as possible. Provably fair algorithms all run on a predetermined basis and don’t change depending on the payout percentage of the game.
What are wagering requirements?
A wagering requirement, sometimes referred to as a ‘playthrough requirement’, is the number of times you must bet through a bonus amount before you can withdraw any winnings from it. The maximum wagering requirement regulated casinos can place on a bonus is 10x.
What are casino jackpots?
A casino jackpot is the maximum win available on a specific casino game, paid out to the player who meets the game’s winning criteria. Casino jackpots come in different shapes and sizes across slots, Megaways titles and poker for example.
