I nearly bought a fake power tool, and the packaging almost fooled me

I’ve spent enough time shopping for power tools to know what I usually look for. I usually give the packaging a quick glance to make sure I’m getting the right product, but I’ve never thought I’d need to look much closer. After all, how hard could it be to spot a fake power tool? I always assumed counterfeit products would have some glaring giveaway, like misspelled names, blurry logos, or poorly printed packaging.

But from what I’ve seen and experienced, counterfeit sellers have gotten much better at copying established brands and their packaging. My biggest mistake was assuming a power tool was genuine just because it looked the part, but there are three things to watch for when buying power tools —and what I’d check before buying my next one.

Familiar packaging doesn’t guarantee an authentic product

Check the seller, not just the box

When I shop for a power tool, I first recognize the manufacturer’s branding. Whether it’s Ryobi or Milwaukee power tools, I already know what their products and packaging look like. Unfortunately, counterfeit sellers know that, too.

The Power Tool Institute (PTI) warns that counterfeiters can misuse official manufacturer logos and studio images to make fraudulent websites and product listings appear legitimate. Some even include actual manufacturer names in their domain names to make their websites seem more trustworthy. That’s why I don’t stop at checking the product itself. I also pay attention to who’s selling it.

I start by checking for a verifiable business address, a clear return policy, and direct authorization. I also visit the manufacturer’s website to confirm that the retailer is authorized. As for the packaging, inconsistent fonts, spelling errors, incorrect model numbers, or missing product information can all raise red flags. However, these are only warning signs, and not definitive proof of a counterfeit.

I had no idea Ryobi sold this stuff directly

I was surprised you can buy these things directly from Ryobi’s website.

A price that’s too good to be true probably deserves an explanation

Compare prices before jumping on a bargain

I love finding a good deal on power tools, especially during a holiday discount or when retailers mark down older models. However, there’s a difference between a legitimate sale and a suspicious discount. PTI warns that counterfeit power tool websites may advertise products at discounts of up to 80% off the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (SRP).

I always compare the listing price with the manufacturer’s SRP and what other reputable retailers charge. Major power tool brands also have Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policies that help keep advertised discounts within a reasonable range. So, when a deal seems unusually steep, I take a closer look.

For example, if I see a $300 kit listed for just $45, I’m not going to assume I’ve found the deal of the year. I’d want to know what’s behind that price. Is it refurbished? Are some accessories missing? Is the seller authorized to sell it? It could even be a counterfeit product or a scam listing. I’m always happy about a good bargain as much as anyone, but not enough to risk spending money on a counterfeit tool.

The biggest problem might be hiding inside the battery

Don’t overlook the risk of counterfeit batteries

Counterfeit batteries are one of the biggest reasons I’d be cautious when shopping for cordless power tools. From what I learned, genuine cordless power tools rely on digital communication between the battery, tool, and charger to keep everything working safely. These systems also have built-in protections that monitor temperature, voltage, and other critical functions.

The problem is that counterfeit batteries may lack these safeguards. Some use lower-quality cells, poorly made wiring, and imitation communication chips that simply trick the tool into recognizing the battery. It might seem to work at first, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to use.

That’s what concerns me most. A counterfeit pack can overheat and experience thermal runaway, potentially causing fires or explosions. Unstable voltage can also damage the tool or charger. What I do is check the model number against the manufacturer’s official compatibility information, look for legitimate safety certification marks such as UL or CSA, and buy replacements only from authorized sellers.

You don’t have to avoid every third-party seller or cheaper alternatives

I’d rather miss a discount than risk buying a fake

Of course, not every tool sold outside a manufacturer’s official store is counterfeit, and not every third-party battery or power tool accessory is automatically a fake. Legitimate aftermarket products, independent retailers, refurbished tools, and secondhand equipment exist. Some even offer reasonable alternatives for people who don’t want to pay full retail prices.

However, there’s an important distinction between a product that’s honestly sold as a third-party alternative and one that’s deliberately made to look like an original manufacturer’s product. A little extra research can save you from an expensive mistake and help you find a deal that’s actually worth it.

My biggest takeaway from counterfeit power tools is that familiar packaging doesn’t guarantee anything. A product can look legitimate in photos, carry convincing branding, and have an attractive price without being authentic.

Before buying, I’d verify the retailer, compare the model number with the manufacturer’s official product listing, and check that the battery and charger are legitimate. I’d also look for authorized sellers instead of risking an unfamiliar website offering an unbelievable discount.

I don’t mind paying less for a power tool, and I certainly don’t think every buyer needs the most expensive equipment available. But I’d rather spend a little more knowing exactly what I’m getting than discover that the product I bought was fake.
