In Enfield, 334 candidates stood for the local elections
Labour has lost control of Enfield Council in the 2026 local elections with no political party now holding a majority. Elections were held in all 63 seats on the North London council with a party needing at least 32 seats to run the council.
Labour lost eight seats so went from 35 to now holding 27 seats. While the Conservatives gained six seats to now have 31 on the council they fell one short of claiming a majority. The Green Party also won five seats in the 2026 election.
An Enfield Council spokesperson said: “With no group having an overall majority, discussions will now take place between elected councillors to agree executive arrangements. Senior officials including the Chief Executive from Enfield Council will provide support and guidance.”
Enfield Council’s Returning Officer and Chief Executive, Perry Scott, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who helped to support the smooth running of this election. In Enfield, 334 candidates were fielded and for the first time in decades for a local election, the verification and counting of ballots took place at the Civic Centre. This was a significant logistical undertaking, and I am grateful to all those whose hard work ensured the democratic process was conducted safely, professionally and efficiently.
“Discussions will now take place with representatives of political groups with a view to forming an administration. My team will be on hand to provide appropriate support during this process.”
Seats on Enfield Council were up for election in the wards of Arnos Grove, Bowes, Brimsdown, Bullsmoor, Bush Hill Park, Carterhatch, Cockfosters, Edmonton Green, Enfield Lock, Grange Park, Haselbury, Highfield, Jubilee, Lower Edmonton, New Southgate, Oakwood, Palmers Green, Ponders End, Ridgeway, Southbury, Southgate, Town, Upper Edmonton, Whitewebbs, and Winchmore Hill.
