The first trailer has been released for upcoming Gothic horror film Victorian Psycho, ahead of it’s premiere this afternoon at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film – which doesn’t yet have a confirmed UK release – stars Maika Monroe (Reminders of Him), Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter series) and Ruth Wilson (Luther), and is based on a novel of the same name by Virginia Feito.
Feito has also penned the screenplay for the movie, which will be directed by Zachary Wigon (Sanctuary, The Heart Machine).
The synopsis for the film reads: “When eccentric governess Winifred (Monroe) arrives at a remote gothic manor in Victorian England, her unnerving charm hides a deadly secret.
“Strange, unsettling incidents become harder to ignore as Winifred descends into madness, and her increasingly brutal acts shatter the calm of the estate. How far will this psycho killer go, and who will survive her wrath?”
We get a taste of some of those strange, unsettling incidents and Winifred’s increasingly brutal acts in the trailer, which opens with Monroe asking: “What is the most important thing in life? Knowing good from evil.”
She continues: “But what is evil? Can you touch it? Can you smell it? Can you taste it on your tongue?”
All the while, we see everything from the discovery of a severed ear underneath a bed to the reveal of a decomposing skull – all soundtracked by the heavy metal song Throw Yourself to the Sword by Die Spitz.
We then see Isaacs carrying out what appears to be some kind of examination on Winifred. His conclusion? “That’s exactly as I thought. You have an organ of lust.”
