This gorgeous outdoor pool is the perfect place to spend the heatwave
With the sunshine set to return this weekend and temperatures due to climb to a sweltering 33C on bank holiday Monday, you may be looking for a fun and refreshing way to cool off.
If swimming is your thing, a beach or lido is the perfect hot-weather destination. One South coast lido brings the best of both worlds, offering a serene poolside experience right next to some of the UK’s most gorgeous beaches – and it’s just over an hour from London on the train.
Numerous historic lido sites have been restored to their original glory in recent years, and Saltdean Lido is one fantastic example. Designed by architect RWH Jones, Saltdean Lido possesses the unique status of being the only grade II* listed coastal lido in the country.
However, a short time ago this cherished lido nearly vanished altogether. Thankfully, after a determined campaign by local people, the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign successfully convinced the site’s freeholders (Brighton and Hove City Council) to prevent housing development and reclaim the lease. This vital intervention preserved the Lido, which welcomed visitors again in 2017.
The swimming pool boasts heated water, alongside a designated paddling pool and play space for youngsters. Available facilities include changing rooms, toilets, and refreshment options.
A TripAdvisor review from August 2020 states: “Wonderful lido with safe lane swimming. Easy to book through the app and clear instructions re Covid safety both online and on arrival. There is free parking and safe queuing outside the lido.”
They continued: “There is an easy-to-follow one-way system, you need to arrive swim-ready, and you can leave your bag in white-lined boxes around the pool…The pool is divided into a family swim area and two lanes for adult-only swimming, one fast lane and a slower lane – so perfect for everyone. Numbers are restricted so it is very safe and I felt very lucky to be able to enjoy a good swim outdoors.”
For dog enthusiasts, the lido provides designated sessions where dogs can enjoy a swim, including a special slot exclusively for Golden Retrievers (an absolute delight) in September, also known as ‘Dogtember’.
Getting There
Reaching this iconic lido is straightforward – simply catch a train from Victoria to Brighton, a journey of approximately one hour, followed by a half-hour bus ride.
Saltdean Lido welcomes visitors from 7am to 8pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 7am to 7pm on all other days, with a comprehensive schedule detailing availability for various groups. The full pricing breakdown can be found here.
