The forthcoming England vs Mexico clash is a much-anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 knockout tie set for Monday, 6 July 2026 at 1am BST (Sunday, 5 July at 6:00pm local time). The encounter will take place at the legendary, high-altitude Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where tournament co-hosts Mexico will benefit from a fervent home support.
The fixture was temporarily thrown into disarray following a proposed plan by FIFA to move the kick-off forward by six hours to sidestep heavy thunderstorms predicted for Sunday evening in Mexico City. However, following fierce opposition and outrage from both the English FA and the Mexican Football Federation – who contended it would completely upend team preparation and expose players to the midday heat – FIFA reversed course and confirmed the match will go ahead at its scheduled time.
England supporters in the UK will either need to stay up late or set an early alarm, as the Government has already confirmed there will be no additional Bank Holiday for the fixture.
However, they will be able to watch the match in a pub environment if they wish, as outgoing Prime Minister Kier Starmer has extended pub opening hours until 5am on Monday in recognition of the fixture.
England football supporters have taken to social media to make an ominous prediction though, as the match remains at its original time.
Taking to Reddit after the news was announced, one fan wrote: “Fully expect there will now be a storm delay just to make the farce even worse.”
While another predicted: “Pubs close at 5am. Delayed game kicks off at 5am.”
Someone else added: “It would be kinda funny if it gets rained off and everyone just skives work to watch it at 9am UK time instead.”
While a further fan admitted: “It gonna be s**t if it thunderstorms all morning and gets postponed though.”
Someone else also remarked: “Going to be great fun when I wait up until 1am to watch this only for lightning to cancel it anyway.”
While another added: “You can just see a lengthy delay during the game that completely breaks one team’s momentum and changes the game.”
A further fan simply stated: “What a mess, classic FIFA.”
England are marginal favourites with the bookmakers heading into the contest against Mexico.
Nevertheless, despite England appearing to hold the upper hand on paper with their star-studded line-up, both bookmakers and analysts regard this as an exceptionally close and evenly matched fixture, largely owing to Mexico’s considerable home advantage.
