A pair of bungling robbers put on Scouse accents and pretended to be from Liverpool as they squabbled during a calamitous corner shop raid.
Stephen Bradley and David Oakley burst into their local convenience store Maddy’s, in New Mills, Derbyshire, in November last year wearing balaclavas and Liverpool scarves wrapped one of their heads. They threatened staff with an imitation gun and a knife before making off with nine bottles of Jack Daniels whisky, £200 in cash and £4,000 worth of cigarettes.
But they were caught on CCTV arguing with each other in false Scouse accents, with one calling the other “Charles” in a bid to hide their identities, before apologising to the shopkeeper and telling them “we’ll never come again and we’ll never hurt you”.
During the robbery they loudly proclaimed they were from Liverpool and that they needed to get back on the motorway as soon as possible. Footage then shows them forcing the shopkeeper to empty the till before asking her to help them gather up the loose coins.
The pair then squabble over who is carrying what before telling the shopkeeper “I’m sorry love I really am” on the way out the door.
Police were called after reports of two men running up Church Road in New Mills with balaclavas and the imitation gun, which at the time was believed to be a pistol.
They were tracked down to a property in New Street shortly after and arrested. Inside the house officers found a large amount of tobacco, nine bottles of Jack Daniels and a silver pellet gun.
The pair were jailed for four years each after they pleaded guilty to robbery at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester last week. Bradley, 56, also admitted to possession of an imitation firearm and Oakley, 48, also admitted possession of a knife.
