The Met Office defines heatwaves differently depending on where you are in the UK, but in London it’s three consecutive days of 28C heat or higher
London heatwave number six is on its way. BBC forecasters predict that between Tuesday, August 11, and Saturday, August 15, temperatures will range between 28C and 30C.
Many of us may be dismayed at this news, as the sweaty weather can be all too much. Until then temperatures will range between 23C and 27C. The Met Office defines heatwaves differently depending on where you are in the UK, but in the capital its three consecutive days of 28C heat or higher.
The Met Office’s day-by-day forecast doesn’t stretch as far as the BBC’s, however its long range forecast is slightly more forgiving on the land than the BBC’s daily forecast. It says we may see some thunder, as well as conceding to being hot, but nothing ‘exceptional’ like we’ve seen in recent times.
WXCharts also has a toasty forecast ahead, with it predicting a boiling hot night on Thursday, August 13. It claims the mercury will reach about 31C at midnight, making for a very uncomfortable night’s sleep.
The forecast reads: “This means there is a greater chance of frontal systems or thundery interludes to affect southern and eastern areas, certainly in comparison to recent weeks, though rainfall amounts could be quite variable with some areas seeing relatively little. For the most part, temperatures look to remain above average, especially in the south, though perhaps without the exceptional heat we have seen in recent weeks.”
It comes as water storage is down by 15 per cent in a month, Thames Water said. The company’s Water Director said we needn’t worry about taps running dry but ‘every drop counts’ during a drought.
“It’s been bone dry, we’ve not been able to abstract an awful lot of water,” said Martin Padley, Water Director at Thames Water.
“But there is still water for everybody to drink, nobody needs to worry but it is quite an important situation we’re in at the moment,” he added.
