It’s one of London’s best little-known spots
America is renowned for doing everything on a grand scale, from its cuisine and cars to huge cities that make London look like a quaint village. And then there are the trees.
The Sierra Nevada mountains are home to the legendary Californian Redwoods, which remarkably, are now more common in Britain than across the pond. Yes, you read that right.
With temperatures climbing, their population is declining along the west coast, yet they’re flourishing over here. And guess what?
They can be spotted in London if you’re in the know.
Havering Country Park would certainly appear on any roundup of the capital’s most overlooked green spaces. Most Londoners haven’t even heard of it.
Even residents of East London typically head to Greenwich when seeking some green space, so what chance does anyone else stand?
Getting to the park requires a bit of effort, so allow for a full day’s excursion should you fancy a visit. The Elizabeth line will take you as far as Romford, after which you’ll need to hop on a bus and do some walking.
Upon arrival, make your way into the park through Wellingtonia Avenue, an impressively titled pathway bordered by soaring redwoods.
Should travelling to the outer edges of East London not appeal, there are alternative locations across the capital where these magnificent trees can be found. Several stand on Edgware’s fittingly named Giant Redwood Avenue, and there’s even one at Hampstead Heath.
However, if you genuinely wish to surround yourself amongst the trees, make your way to Kew Gardens.
