A fresh Met Office weather warning has been issued for the bank holiday weekend.

Yellow warnings are in place for heavy showers and thunderstorms, while festivalgoers are set to be hit by more wet weather.

People at Reading, Leeds and other live music events are likely to see rain on Saturday as low pressure pushes eastwards, which will be followed by heavy showers.

The warning stretches from south-west England and parts of Wales across the Midlands to the east of England, and will be in force from midday until 9pm on Saturday.

It means flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, trains could be delayed and car journeys could take longer, the forecaster said.

Some areas within the warning could see 15-25mm of rain in an hour, and 30mm in two to three hours, along with hail and lightning.

The warning adds: “An area of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move across this region during the afternoon and early evening, affecting areas in the west first and moving progressively east towards evening with drier weather following. Some places could see 15-25 mm of rain in an hour, and 30 mm in two to three hours, with hail and lightning additional hazards.”

The cricket is likely to be affected by showers at Lord’s in London, the Met Office added.

Five areas, mainly across the Midlands, are covered by Environment Agency flood alerts, meaning floods are possible.

It comes after a rainy start to day two of Reading festival, with attendees pictured frolicking in the rain and many hiding beneath plastic ponchos as they braved the poor weather conditions.

Others remained in good spirits, laughing and posing for photos despite their outfits being covered in mud.

Many artists braved the rain to perform at the event, including US rock band Geese – who ended up drenched as heavy downpour seeped through the tent during their set at The Gallery stage.

Frontman Cameron Winter tried his best to humour the damp crowd as he jokingly told them: “Don’t drink the tent water, it’s not good for you.”

The Met Office has previously said the UK is on course for its hottest summer on record after five heatwaves, with temperatures of up to 38.1C recorded in London.
