A GP has been struck off after he developed a ‘ridiculous paranoia’ that his younger girlfriend was having an affair and forced her to check in every 15 minutes by messaging him.

Dr Walid Ahmed insisted that his partner messaged him every 15 minutes when they were apart as part of a ‘horrific’ controlling relationship.

The family doctor installed tracking devices on her phone so he could control when she bought drinks and when she went to the toilet.

Dr Ahmed controlled what she wore and if he had any doubt about her whereabouts would make her call or take photographs for most of the duration of their year-long relationship – in which he ‘manifested’ in every part of her life.

Dr Ahmed was jailed for 32 months for his ‘appalling’ behaviour that caused his ex-girlfriend to ‘become a shell of her former self’.

He has now been struck off from working as a GP by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service [MPTS].

Dr Ahmed qualified from Ain Shams University in Egypt in 1996 and worked as a GP in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Dr Ahmed was involved in a relationship with Ms A, who was significantly younger than him, but quickly after it began he began to control and coerce her over a period of nearly a year in a number of ‘different horrific ways’.

He isolated her from her family and friends, deleted her social media apps and contact details of other men on her phone.

He controlled what clothes, make up and perfume she wore and had a ‘ridiculous paranoia’ that she was cheating on him which ‘manifested’ itself in him trying to control every aspect of her life.

When they were apart he insisted that they messaged and would sometimes make her message every 15 minutes to check in with him.

If he was suspicious about her whereabouts, he would require FaceTime calls or photographs to prove where she was.

He also installed tracking services on her phone and required her to contact him in order to go to the bathroom or get a drink.

The court heard: “He ruined Ms A’s life over the period to the extent that she became a shell of her former self, withdrawing from friends and family becoming unemployed and having no freedom in her life.”

On October 9, 2025 after pleading not guilty, he was convicted of engaging in controlling coercive behaviour against Ms A and jailed for two years and eight months and given a ten-year restraining order.

The sentencing judge at Bournemouth Crown Court said: “As to harm, in my judgement, this case falls into category one, given the very serious alarm and distress which was suffered by Ms A causing her substantial adverse effects and also causing her significant psychological harm, as was evidenced during the trial by Ms A herself, her family members, friends and former work colleagues”

At the time of his conviction he was 50 and of previous good character.

The trial was held in his absence and he ‘likely remains outside the United Kingdom’ and he has not served any of his sentence – having not practised medically since December 2020.

The case has now been heard by the MPTS and he has been struck off for the ‘premeditated nature’ of the ‘abhorrent’ offending.

Sean Ell, chairing the hearing, said: “Taking everything into account the Tribunal was therefore of the view that Dr Ahmed’s conduct was at the higher end of the spectrum of seriousness.

“Dr Ahmed’s behaviour was predatory. It involved him isolating Ms A from her family and friends, deleting her social media apps from her phone and the contact details of any males on her phone.

“The Tribunal noted that as there was no evidence of any reflection, remediation, or any steps taken by Dr Ahmed to address his conviction or to reduce the risk of similar behaviour recurring the Tribunal was unable to conclude that the risk of repetition had been adequately addressed.

“Given the extreme behaviour exhibited by Dr Ahmed, and the high risk of repetition, the Tribunal considered that there remained a significant risk that, if Dr Ahmed were permitted to return to unrestricted practice, patients and colleagues could be exposed to harm.

“By his criminal conduct Dr Ahmed breached fundamental tenets of the medical profession, including the requirements to act within the law and to not abuse his position.

“The Tribunal considered that the public would be justifiably appalled by a doctor being convicted of this offence and by the conduct underlying it, namely that of a doctor using coercive and controlling behaviour, which included restricting his partner from showering or using the toilet without his permission.”
