Transport for London released a walking Tube map in case you fancy a street-level stroll

Getting around on the Tube is the go-to method of travel for many Londoners. Everyone has their favourite lines, just as everyone has their least favourite.

Everyone, too, has an opinion on the best service, whether you stick to the Tube or prefer the Overground, DLR or Elizabeth line. If you’re a hardline South Londoner, you may even cheer from the Tram’s corner.

Some years ago, in welcome news for those who favour exploring the city on foot, Transport for London (TfL) launched a revamped walking Tube map that displays the time required to stroll between stations.

TfL wrote: “Walking can be a quick and easy way to get around, particularly when travelling during the busiest times, which are 5:45am-8:15am and 4pm-5:30pm, Monday to Friday.

“This map shows how much time it takes to walk between stations on the same line.”

The updated map demonstrates that numerous Zone 1 stations are just a 10-minute stroll apart, presenting a speedy alternative to enduring a packed Tube carriage. Stations located further from Central London, however, have considerably greater distances between them (but you knew this).

For example, the journey on foot from Highbury and Islington to King’s Cross – just a single stop on the Overground – would require a brisk 35-minute walk.

Likewise, the stretch between Surrey Quays and Queens Road Peckham amounts to a 38-minute walk, despite the two stations being only one Overground stop apart.

If you’re into the intracacies of the Tube, you may be interested in 3D models of London’s most iconic stations.

After a 2015 freedom of information request, Transport for London published its own diagrams of every London Underground station’s public spaces, including the train tubes, pedestrian tunnels, staircases, and more. The diagrams offer a view of the twists, turns, and angles of each station.

You can check out the maps here.
